Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any rules for this event?

Don't start working on your game before the event. Pick your game ideas from @petermolydeux's Twitter feed. Molydeux has lovingly currated some ideas which he feels would best suit the jam here, but you can pick any of them.

Is everyone just working from one idea or can each team pick an idea they like?

You pick whichever @petermolydeux tweet you like.

What is the schedule for Molyjam?

The jam will commence Friday, March 30th, at 7pm (19:00) local time. Work on all games will conclude on Sunday, April 1st, at 7pm (19:00) local time. This will be followed by a festival of the amazing games you guys just made.

Where do I go?

Check with your local Facebook invite where the venue will be.

Will computers be provided?

No, please bring your own laptops. You will have power and Wi-Fi access at the venue. Alternatively, you can work from home and just attend the kickoff on Friday and the fest on Sunday.

Who owns the games that are made?

The teams who made the games own the games. We will have a way for you to submit an executable to us so that others can check out what you've made, and we encourage you to do so, but it's your choice whether to send it to us. We will not ask you for source code or game assets. If you choose to release the game commercially, make sure the engine licenses are all squared away, because any licenses provided at the jam may be temporary.

Is it a good idea that my team has 26 people?

We recommend team sizes to not exceed 5 core members. You only have 48 hours to make a game and it's just easier to make it happen with a smaller team.

Do I have to spend my entire weekend at the local venue or can I work from home?

We encourage you to come to your local event on Friday, March 30th for the kickoff so that you can meet other participating devs and form up into teams if you still need to. You can work from home, if you wish, the rest of the time, but please do attend the fest on Sunday night, where you can show off your game and have a chance to check out what other teams have made.

I don't have any programming skills. Am I doomed?

There will likely be an awesome engineer at your local meetup you can totally team up with, but if by some miracle you cannot find one, artist-friendly game engines will be provided. Here are some for you to familiarize yourself with: Game Maker, Construct 2, and Game Salad. It is recommended you check out Unity, as well. This is a fun game that teaches you Unity. These free engines are also recommended: Flixel and Flashpunk.

Will there be a way to participate remotely?

Yes. We will make a submissions website available to you so that you can post the executable for your game to share with everyone. How you work remotely is up to you. If you are near a hosting location, it will be a lot more fun for you to physically attend, at least some of the time.

Will the event be live-streamed?

Yes. Details forthcoming.
